Water Service Line Material
Water Service Line Material Spencer’s water system is required to do an inventory of the water service line material that services drinking water to our customers. For customers we were not able to determine based on the city plumbing card, we are asking this brief questionnaire to be completed.

Where do I find the water service line? The water service line comes into the home or business in the basement or crawl space, this is typically near the water meter and comes in from the floor or wall.
How to determine what material a water line is:
- Galvanized: a dull, silver-gray color. Use a magnet – strong magnets will typically cling to galvanized pipes.
- Copper: The color of a copper penny.
- Plastic/Polyethylene(P.E.): Various colors like black, white or blue. Rigid pipe that is joined to water supply piping with a clamp.
- Lead: A dull, silver-gray color that is easily scratched with a coin. Use a magnet – strong magnets will not cling to lead pipes.
If the water line is painted, it will have to be scratched or use sand paper to determine the material.
