Customer Service Billing Associate

Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) is a successful municipally owned utility provider currently seeking a full-time Customer Service Billing Associate. We are seeking a team player with experience serving in a customer-focused operation. SMU has proudly met the electric and water needs of local Spencer, Iowa residents since 1942. Telecommunication service offerings were added for the community in 1997.

The ideal candidate would be a self-motivated individual with excellent communication skills responsible for interacting with current customers and prospective customers either by telephone, electronically or face to face. This position has a primary focus on customer billing and payment processing, utilizing multiple systems and applications to research, analyze and respond to all customer inquiries.  Responsible for assuming ownership and responding to customers (internal/external) billing correspondence, complaints and inquiries in an efficient, accurate and professional manner to achieve an optimal outcome. 

Our Requirements:

• Must be 18 years of age and have a High School Diploma or GED.
• One (1) to three (3) years in a customer or member service position, preferably in a utilities industry, financial services industry, or a call center type environment.
• Two (2) years of accounting, financial support, accounts maintenance or related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
• Required to possess and maintain a valid Iowa driver’s license and meet SMU insurability requirements
