SMU Cares Donates to Feed Our Children

SMU Cares, a group of Spencer Municipal Utilities employees decided to get help from SMU employees last fall to help deliver the SMU telephone directories throughout Spencer and a few surrounding communities. The money earned by employees donating their time, was recently given to Feed Our Children here in Spencer.

SPENCER MUNICIPAL UTILITIES TO EXPAND FIBER TO THE HOME

Spencer Municipal Utilities is set to begin an estimated $2 million project to expand providing fiber to the home communication services beginning in the summer of 2013. Fiber to the home is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fiber from SMU’s switching equipment all the way to the service address.

2012 SMU Water Quality Report Available

The latest edition of Spencer Municipal Utilities’ annual Consumer Confidence Report on water quality has been prepared and is being distributed. The report provides details of drinking water testing conducted during the calendar year 2011. SMU regularly tests over 80 drinking water contaminants, and the 2011 data again shows no violations of EPA rules for water quality.

SMU USED EMERGENCY WATER SUPPLY DISCHARGE

Spencer Municipal Utilities was forced to use an emergency water supply discharge to Stolley Pond for a plant upset for approximately three hours May 18th causing a small amount of lime to be discharged. SMU worked closely with Iowa DNR personnel to verify that the impacts were minimized and no apparent damage to aquatic life occurred.

SMU COMMUNICATIONS CELEBRATES 15TH ANNIVERSARY

Sunday will mark the 15 year anniversary of Spencer’s entry into the municipal communications business. On May 6, 1997, voters in Spencer approved a referendum to establish a municipal communications utility to be owned and operated on behalf of citizens by Spencer Municipal Utilities.
