SPENCER MUNICIPAL UTILITIES EXPANDING FIBER TO THE HOME CONSTRUCTION

Spencer Municipal Utilities is continuing to expand fiber to the home communication services throughout Spencer after the Board of Trustees awarded a contract at their meeting last week. A project that was announced last year is being finished up that will serve approximately 700 customers and work will begin early this fall on an approximate $4.5 million project for nearly 2,000 additional homes and businesses in Spencer.

The latest edition of Spencer Municipal Utilities’ annual Consumer Confidence Report on water quality has been prepared and is being distributed electronically again this year at www.smunet.net/2014ccr.php. This is the second year for electronic distribution, rather than mailing directly to customers.

Spencer Municipal Utilities Board Approves Communication Rate Increase

The Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) Board of Trustees approved a communication rate increase at their April board meeting. The rates will change beginning June 1, 2014. Basic Plus will be $50.75 per month, SD Plus will be $9.00 per month, HBO will be $15.00 per month, Residential Broadband will be $40.00 per month, Residential Broadband Plus will be $45.00 per month and Residential Broadband Premiere will be $55.00 per month.

SPENCER MUNICIPAL UTILITIES RESIDENTIAL ELECTRIC CUSTOMERS PAID THE LOWEST RATE IN THE STATE IN 2012

The American Public Power Association (APPA) distributed their 2012 electric rate study earlier this week and Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) residential electric customers paid the lowest rate of any residential customer in the state of Iowa in 2012 at 6.8 cents per kilowatt hour. The data used in the study is what each utility reports to the Department of Energy and it is the average revenue per kilowatt hour.

SMU Donates to Spencer High School Weight Room

Spencer Municipal Utilities recently donated $5,000 to the Spencer Community Schools for their “Building Tiger Tradition” campaign to raise money to make improvements to the Spencer High School weight room. The overall fundraising goal is $150,000 and they are taking donations through September 15th.

SMU Board Approves Water and Electric Rate Increases

Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) Board of Trustees has approved a water and electric rate increase effective June 1, 2013. The increases, which were approved at the board’s April meeting, are designed to pay for costs of repairs and maintenance needed on the water and electric systems.
