With construction continuing on Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) Water Treatment Facility, and water being treated and supplied from the 32nd Avenue Pump House rather than the Water Treatment Facility through the next few days, SMU water customers may experience some rusty water.

This brownish-yellow colored water is bacterially safe and still meets all regulatory standards, however, SMU suggests that customers may want to use caution when doing laundry during this time. Another slight difference customers may notice during this time is the hardness of the water as well as the taste and smell due to a different chlorination process for treating the water. SMU does not expect any interruptions to water service throughout the construction process.

Over the next few days, we anticipate additional hydrant flushing to help alleviate the discolored water, so customers may also notice some additional hydrant flushing in their area.

We appreciate customer’s patience during this time and look forward to continuing to provide quality water for the community of Spencer. When the construction is complete, it will increase treatment capacity, expand the raw water source, reliability, safety and lime handling of the system.

If customers have questions or concerns regarding the water during the construction process, they can contact SMU by phone at 580.5800.

Spencer Municipal Utilities is a leading provider of cable, internet, telephone and iWireless cellular service in the Spencer community and has been providing water since 1886 and electric services since 1901.
