When Hurricane Irma hit Florida earlier this month, many were left without electricity and as part of the mutual aid program through Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities, Spencer Municipal Utilities sent three line workers and two trucks.

“We have sent crews for mutual aid in the past, but this was the first time these line workers have assisted with hurricane recovery,” says Amanda Gloyd, marketing and community relations manager.

Those from SMU traveled and worked with others from other Iowa municipals to Moore Haven, Florida, which is located northwest of Miami. Those from other municipals included Alta, Denison, Lake Park and Sioux Center.

Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities coordinated the efforts with the American Public Power Association, and SMU coordinated the efforts for the group from Northwest Iowa.

“We were glad these individuals stepped up to help out as well as those here in Spencer to make sure our community was taken care of as well,” adds Gloyd.

SMU is a leading provider of cable, internet, and telephone service in the Spencer community and has been providing water since 1886 and electric services since 1901.
