Rebate Program Important Notice
Spencer Municipal Utilities offers its customers rebates for the purchase and
installation of several energy efficient appliances, heating and air
conditioning devices, motors, and lighting.
To apply for an Energy Efficiency Rebate, fill out an application form and return it to our office. You can pick up a form at our office, or download and print the form using one of the links below. A copy of the receipt must accompany your application.

1) For both air conditioners and heat pumps, SMU will pre-authorize the rebate to help both the customer and the contractor with planning. A pre-authorization form is available from SMU. The installation must be completed and operational by the end of the calendar year.
2) In order to receive a rebate for an Energy Star rated refrigerator, applicant must provide written proof of disposal of their old refrigerator. Proof of disposal can be provided by your appliance dealer or a receipt for disposal from the City of Spencer Solid Waste Department. Proof of disposal
Commercial Rebates
SMU commercial customers are eligible for any of the items listed in the Residential Rebates table above. In addition, SMU offers rebates for lighting retrofit projects or new construction that utilizes efficient metal halide, high pressure sodium, T8, Super T8, T5, or LED lighting, as well as for electric motors. General Information on the 2008 Energy Efficiency
Rebate Program
1) The effective date is January 1, 2008 . Programs may be changed or cancelled by SMU without notice. Customers should check with the SMU office for information on programs.
2) The energy efficient device(s) shall be installed in the SMU service territory and cannot be relocated or sold for resale until retired from service.
3) SMU reserves the right to verify installation and invoices prior to rebate being paid.
4) SMU reserves the right to meter (at SMU expense) installed equipment to aid in determination of actual energy savings.
5) Rebates will not exceed equipment costs minus any manufacturers or dealer rebates.
6) To receive rebates for items for the 2008 program, the items must be purchased and/or installed during 2008. Following are the deadlines for turning in the rebates to SMU for payment:
a. Items purchased and installed before 12/1/08 --Rebate filing due by 12/31/08
b. Items purchased and installed between 12/1/08 and 12/31/08 --Rebate filing due by 1/31/09.
7) Any dealers participating in the program must sign a letter of agreement stating their intent to follow the rules and regulations of this program.
8) Customers are responsible to insure that all equipment is installed in accordance with all codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
9) Rebates will be approved on new devices only. No rebates will be approved for used items.
10) SMU does not guarantee reduced usage, demand, or cost savings. SMU makes no warranties, expressed or implied, with the respect to any equipment purchased or installed. In no event shall SMU be liable for any incidental or consequential damages. SMU does not endorse any manufacturer or product in this program.
11) Completed applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis, until available funds are committed.
12) Any income tax or other taxes which may be payable as a result of the rebate being paid (or applied to the utility account) are the responsibility of the customer.
13) The decision of Spencer Municipal Utilities regarding any disputes which arise in the rebate program is final.
