SMU - Telephone Scam aimed at customers

Spencer Municipal Utilities has been made aware of a telephone scam that has been occurring over the past couple of days.  A caller who acts as an SMU representative informs the customer that their service is up for disconnection unless they provide a credit card number to pay the bill.  Several commercial customers have received this type of phone call and realized that is was not a legitimate call.  They have notified SMU and law enforcement.  Please be aware that this telephone scam is occurring.

A few tips from SMU to help determine if it is a scam:

  • SMU does not strongly recommend a specific type of payment. We have a variety of options available for customers to make a payment.
  • If you receive a call from someone you think is a scammer, hang up, and call SMU at 712-580-5800 (the number on your statement) to check the status of your account if you are unsure of the status of it.
  • SMU does not contact customers asking you for your account number. We already know your account number, and if we speak to you over the phone, we may ask you to verify your identity.
  • Don’t assume the caller ID is accurate when receiving a call.
