Baseball Fans---The 2014 Season is Here!
04/02/2014 9:14 AM
With Opening Day earlier this week, we want to let fans know what to expect for baseball coverage this season.
The 2014 Major League Baseball (MLB) season will have TV blackouts for fans from several teams in the Midwest.
Just like previous years, national broadcasts of several teams will be blacked out on some of the channels for SMU cable customers. These blackouts are a direct result of MLB rules and are not a choice of Spencer Municipal Utilities or the networks. Each network may handle the blackouts differently.
Iowa falls in a zone where a total of six (6) teams are blacked out under MLB rules. Those teams are: Minnesota Twins, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals.
Every cable or Satellite TV provider in Iowa will experience some blackouts for these teams. In addition to these teams there may be a handful of other games not available in our area due to blackouts throughout the season. While SMU would like to be able to offer these games to our customers, Major League Baseball determines who is able to watch the games on television.
An exception to blackouts for SMU customers due to a programming contract with SMU and FOX Sports North is Minnesota Twins coverage. FOX Sports North and the Minnesota Twins have announced a 150-game telecast schedule for the 2014 season. FOX Sports North will serve as the exclusive local television home for the Minnesota Twins. Twins games will also be televised nationally on FOX Sports and FOX Sports 1. FOX Sports North is on Channel 37 and in HD on Channel 237 in the SMU cable lineup.
MLB Network is also available to follow the baseball season on Channel 139 in SD and Channel 339 in HD in the SMU cable lineup.
To check the schedules of what games will be on for SMU cable, customers can use the guide available with a box from Spencer Municipal Utilities.
