Spencer Municipal Utilities (SMU) electric customers experienced an outage on Friday, January 1st for approximately two hours that was caused by a broken ground wire on one of the main service feeds to our community.

“Our priority on Friday was to get the power restored as quickly as possible for all of our customers. During that process we weren’t able to determine a cause of the outage until today when our staff looked at the situation in more detail,” says Amanda Gloyd, marketing and community relations manager.

Spencer residents are fortunate to be in a community with reliable electric service. With the layout of our distribution we are able to re-route the service which helps us make our minimal response time.

When we experience an outage, we track the details and use that information with planning our maintenance on the system to help reduce a repeated cause. SMU is currently in the planning stages of a project to improve our transmission system reliability to continue to provide reliable electric service to Spencer.

“Once the cause was determined we worked quickly to get the issue fixed to prevent it from causing a future outage. We appreciate customer patience as we worked to get the power restored as quickly as possible on Friday,” adds Gloyd.

Spencer Municipal Utilities is a leading provider of cable, internet, and telephone service in the Spencer community and has been providing water since 1886 and electric services since 1901.
