June 1-October 1

With construction continuing on SMU’s water treatment facility throughout the upcoming summer months, SMU is working hard to minimize the discolored water experienced in various parts of Spencer and is implementing an outdoor watering restriction plan beginning June 1, 2016.

SMU has plenty of water available for domestic use as well as emergencies, which is not the reason for the watering restriction. The watering restriction will help with minimizing the discolored water due to the different treatment process during construction. The more water processed through our treatment facility during a 24-hour period during this time of construction will increase the discolored water some customers have been noticing. The goals of the watering restriction are to reduce overall usage, and maintain constant usage during a 24-hour period.

“The reduction of water usage will be done with an odd/even system for outside watering. Odd-numbered addresses may water on odd-numbered days while even-numbered addresses may water on even-numbered days,” says Amanda Gloyd, SMU marketing & community relations manager.

In order to maintain more constant usage rather than using most of the water during the day, outdoor watering may be done after 10pm and before 4 am, when it is a day to water based on address.

A few other things to consider when helping conserve water this summer include:

  • Don’t waste water by letting it spray on concrete and asphalt
  • Repair leaking sprinkler systems
  • Do not water when it is raining or during high winds
  • Use a hose nozzle with a shut-off valve

SMU anticipates this ending on October 1, 2016. During this time of construction, SMU will have plenty of water available for normal domestic use as well as emergencies.

“We are doing what we can to minimize the discoloration customers may be seeing at times and conserving water this summer will help those efforts,” adds Gloyd.
