PHASE II STARTING IN SEPTEMBER

Phase I of the water plant construction has been completed and the SMU Board of Trustees recently awarded a bid for construction on Phase II of the water plant. This is the final phase of the water plant construction.

Construction is scheduled to begin on this phase in September and scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2017. The improvements included in the first phase of construction were a new clearwell, a new pump building and new backwash tank. Phase II is the final phase of construction and will include the additional raw water source, reliability additions, safety upgrades, and lime handling of our water system in addition to increasing treatment capacity.

During the final phase of construction, we anticipate customers may notice some changes to the quality of the water in terms of hardness, color, taste, and smell. These changes will be caused by an adjustment in the treatment regimen to allow for the construction, because we will not be lime softening and using a different chlorine process for disinfection.

Throughout the construction process, the water will still meet all regulatory standards, even though it won’t be the same quality customers have come to expect. Once Phase II is complete, customers can expect the water quality to be at least as good as it was prior to the construction.
